What the New Xbox Experience Almost Looked Like

Before the current Xbox Experience was debuted, Gridplane studios was commissioned to design the new dashboard and the above screenshot shows one of their concepts. The result was "an enlarged, green-filtered version of the original 360 dashboard, but the company developed an 'immersive 3D environment'." Click here for first picture in gallery.

My favorite screen is actually the simplest - where all of your games span your television. Screw the folks with tiny displays who'd have to squint. I have a big TV.

Honda Fit Review

[via Jalopnik]

The 2009 Honda Fit Sport combines practicality and technology into a subcompact package. With prices starting from $16,260, this car features a touchscreen navigation unit (optional), 5-speed automatic transmission with paddle shift mode, and lots of cup holders. click here for first picture in gallery. Here's the bottom line:

We've recommended that friends and family purchase a Fit more than any other vehicle on sale not just because it's the kind of car that can fit (pun!) into many different lifestyles and fulfill most people’s needs, but also because they'll enjoy owning it. We would.

Acer’s 10 inch netbook will come with Windows, Linux, HDD, and SSD options

All of the information I’ve seen about the new Acer Aspire One netbook with a 10 inch screen has indicated that the laptop will have a 160GB hard drive and run Windows XP. And according to ZDNet, that’s true of the first generation models that should be hitting the shelves in mid-February. But the Acer reportedly plans to offer Linux and solid state disk options as well.

The company is sticking with Linpus Linux Lite as its Linux distribution of choice. The OS is easy to use for people who are unfamiliar with Linux and Acer has had success with the operating system on the 8.9 inch version of the Aspire One laptop. But if you’d rather install another Linux flavor like Linux4one or Kuki Linux, my guess is they’ll run just as well on the new Aspire One as on the original.

While the 8.9 inch Acer Aspire One came with an option of a hard drive or an 8GB or 16GB SSD, Acer plans to offer the new models with just a 16GB SSD and eliminate the second SD card slot that was included in the original model as a way to add extra space for the operating system.

In related news, Acer held a launch event for the new computers in Tokyo and Akihabara News snapped a few photos including the one you see above.

Refurbished Dell Inspiron Mini 9 going for under $200

Sure, it’s no $10 laptop, but for a limited time, you can pick up a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 netbook for as low as $178 from Dell’s Outlet store. Keep in mind, what you’ll get is a refurbished netbook with an 8.9 inch display, a 4GB solid state drive, and 512MB of RAM running Ubuntu 8.04.1 Linux. But you can’t beat the price.

Here’s how to do it. First visit the outlet store, then find the section that says “Check Availability & Prices.” Choose Laptops from the drop down menu. Then filter the results by Inspiron Mini. Finally, click the Price link in the chart to sort by price and you’ll find some netbooks going for $209.

Moblin V2 alpha realease

Moblin is operating software targets to small device for use to access internet such as

netbooks,umpc or MIDs

Moblin V2 for MIDs is now planned for 2010 “Moblin MID is a fully featured platform for next
generation smart phone devices built on Moblin Foundations. It is
expected for release in 2010.” Where does this leave Linux-based MIDs
in 2009. Windows only?

image I was pleased to see the announcement of the Moblin V2 Core Alpha Release today but annoyed to see that it’s “initially targeting Intel(r) Atom(tm) based Netbooks.”

Moblin, the Intel-funded core Linux distribution
intended for OEMs and end-users is something we’ve been following on
UMPCPortal since it’s launch
and we’ve been looking forward to V2 for UMPCs and MIDs but the talk
about little notebooks has us wondering if they’re going to ignore the
touchscreen altogether. To state that it won’t even work with Menlow,
the platform used on small UMPCs and MIDs, is a setback.

Known Issues:

  • The user interface is under heavy development.
The final user interface will look very different than the current user
interface and will not be based on XFCE.

  • 3D performance is known to be slow.

  • Currently, Wifi is not supported on Asus eeePC 901.

  • Platforms with GMA-500 Graphics chipset are not supported.

(From the Moblin website:

The Moblin Project is happy to make the Moblin Core Alpha for Netbooks available for testing and taking the bits out for a ride.

Moblin is a community open source project, initially targeting Intel(r) Atom(tm) based Netbooks.

This Alpha release is the first chance for the larger community to start multiple-level testing of:
  • The core Linux O/S, boot process, inter-process, and package interactions.

  • The new “Fastboot” feature of Moblin, which fundamentally
improves boot time and allows for unprecedented speed for a general
    purpose Linux.

  • Connectivity and networking, using the new ConnMan connectivity manager.

  • Kernel 2.6.29-rc2.

  • The Moblin Core Components (first look at this), including Clutter and all other UI development tools.

  • Xserver 1.6 (with DRI2).

  • New Moblin Image Creator (MIC2) and installation tool.
System Requirements:
CPU: Intel Atom or Intel(r) Core(tm) 2 CPU (support for SSSE3)

  • (Note: Moblin will not work on non-SSSE3 CPUs)

  • Graphics: Integrated Intel graphics (915/945/965)

  • Network Adaptors:

  • LAN/Wired:
    • Intel e100/e1000/e1000e/iXGB
    • PCNet32 (Vmware)
    • RealTek 8139/8169
    • SIS 900/190
    • Broadcom ATL1/ATL2

  • Wireless/Wifi:
    • Intel 3945/4965/5000
    • Atheros 5K/9K
    • Broadcom 4300
    • RealTek 8180/8187
    • Ralink 2400/2500/61/73

Moblin also supports various external, USB-based Wifi devices.
